Iran's envoys to European states have unanimously condemned the desecration of the Holy Qur'an in the US on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

"Iranian ambassadors and political representatives to Europe, who are in Tehran to attend a regional conference..., strongly condemned the desecration of the Holy Qur'an in the US by a pseudo-priest," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the Friday Prayers.

"This insulting US act portrays the workings of the interwoven links of international Zionism in that country's (US) government," the statement added.

Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, was the architect of the plan to burn copies of the Qur'an on the anniversary of the 9/11.

He abandoned the plans in the face of fierce international condemnation but anti-Islam extremist elements in the US tore pages and burned copies of the Qur'an last week, triggering protests in India, Indonesia, Iran and Pakistan.

Earlier on Friday, tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tehran and other main cities to condemn the sacrilege of the Muslim holy book.
